What is Nirbhaya Squad?
The Mumbai police had formed Nirbhaya Squad – a squad comprising of trained women police officials to stop various crimes against women’s rights from sexual harassment, rape, acid attacks, stalking, and others.
When launched?
The squad was formally launched on the 26th of January 2022 afternoon in the presence of Maharashtra Minister DilipWalsePatil during a program at the Mumbai Police Commissioner’s office. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also joined the launch through video conferencing.
Why does it exist? Reason for the existence of this squad.
The move to set up the Nirbhaya Squad came in the aftermath of the brutal rape, and murder of a woman in suburban Sakinaka in 2021, which bore some similarities to the 2012 ‘Nirbhaya’ gang-rape case of Delhi.
The idea for the Nirbhaya Squad came following the brutal 2012 gang rape of a Delhi student, who passed away from her injuries following being raped by six men on a moving bus. She was nicknamed Nirbhaya (the fearless one) by the media since her identity remained anonymous.
Her rape and death sparked outrage across the country and led to new anti-rape laws, as well as the idea for the squad. According to BBC, there was little evidence that rape and harassment of women were slowing down throughout India since the Nirbhaya case. In September of 2021, a 32-year-old woman was brutally raped and killed in a similar fashion to the 2012 case. Just days following her death, the Nirbhaya Squad was formed to honor both of those women lost in brutal, landmark cases, as well as all of the many silent victims.

There are 91 squads in Mumbai for women’s safety. Each squad, set up at every police station, comprises a woman assistant inspector or sub-inspector, a woman constable, a male constable, and a driver. The ‘Mobile-5’ vehicle of each police station has been assigned to this squad.
How does it work?
The helpline number is 103 whichhas been made official would immediately see the women officials come to the aid of distressed women. The ‘Nirbhaya Squad’ is at women’s service 24×7.
- Each police station has established a Women’s Security Cell.
- Mobile-5 patrol vehicles from each police station in Greater Mumbai should be called ‘Nirbhaya Squad’.
- Region ACP woman or police inspector woman rank to be appointed Nodal officer for Nirbhaya Squad.
- Each squad would be made up of a female officer of PSI or ASI rank, a woman and an agent, and a driver.
- Two-day special training for all police employees who will be part of the “Nirbhaya Squad”.
- If a woman is traveling alone late at night, she asks for help, take her to a safer place, and gives the immediate help requested.
- Prepare a list of elderly women who live in her jurisdiction, they must visit and provide the necessary assistance during the patrol.
- A list of criminal records of sexual exploitation of women and children in Mumbai in the last five years should be prepared. The movements of criminals must be monitored.
- The Additional Police Commissioner shall establish CounselingCenters in his jurisdiction for minor victims. Affected children will be counselled by a psychiatrist at M Power.
- Workshops will be organized to train officers and executives of the Nirbhaya Squad.
